Saprophyte
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010519
An organism, particularly a fungus or bacterium, that derives its nourishment from nonliving or decaying organic matter. These organisms secrete enzymes externally to break down complex organic compounds into simpler, soluble substances that can be absorbed. Saprophytes are decomposers in ecosystems, recycling nutrients from dead material back into the environment.
