Postmature

Describing a source rock that has been subjected to temperatures and pressures beyond the optimal range for hydrocarbon generation. In a postmature state, oil and gas have been cracked into lighter hydrocarbons, primarily methane, or even to graphite. This condition is typically identified through vitrinite reflectance measurements above 2.0% Ro.
