Thermally activated mud emulsion
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003811
A water-based shale drilling fluid built on a polyglycol with a cloud point, which stays dissolved at surface temperature. When the shale around the borehole heats it past that point, the glycol separates as droplets that plug pore throats and limit pressure transmission from the mud into the formation. It is abbreviated TAME and was introduced in the early 1990s to reduce borehole instability in reactive shales.
