Water-in-oil emulsion
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004112
A type of drilling fluid, also called an invert emulsion, in which droplets of water or brine are dispersed within a continuous phase of oil or synthetic liquid. This formulation provides excellent shale stability, lubricity, and temperature resistance, making it suitable for drilling challenging wells. The stability of the emulsion is maintained by emulsifying agents, and its properties are controlled by the oil/water ratio, which is monitored on the rig.
