Cloud point glycol

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000710

A type of glycol-based additive used in water-based drilling fluids that exhibits a cloud point, meaning it becomes insoluble and forms a separate phase above a certain temperature. This property allows the glycol to preferentially coat and inhibit shale at elevated downhole temperatures. Cloud point glycols are effective shale inhibitors and fluid loss control agents.
