Pyrolysis

The thermal decomposition of organic matter in the absence of oxygen, often used in laboratory settings to simulate the natural maturation of source rocks. In oil and gas exploration, pyrolysis is a common analytical technique to assess the quantity, type, and thermal maturity of organic matter in rock samples. Rock-Eval pyrolysis is a standard method.
