Gas migration

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001628

The upward movement of gas through a column of drilling fluid or cement in the annulus of a wellbore. This can occur when gas from a permeable formation enters the wellbore and is not adequately contained by the fluid's hydrostatic pressure or gel strength. It can lead to gas cutting, kicks, or even blowouts if not controlled.
