Metal gain
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002326
An increase in the apparent amount of metal in a casing or tubing joint shown by an electromagnetic or magnetic inspection log, compared with nominal wall thickness. It is caused by extra steel such as a patch, liner or collar, or by magnetic debris and scale sitting on the pipe, and it is the opposite of metal loss from corrosion. On decay-based electromagnetic logs it appears as slower signal decay, while metal loss shows faster decay.
