Gain
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001599
The amplification applied to a seismic signal to increase its amplitude for recording and processing. As seismic energy attenuates while traveling through the subsurface, its amplitude decays, requiring gain to make later arrivals visible. Gain functions are designed to recover true relative amplitudes, with common types including programmed gain control (PGC) and automatic gain control (AGC).
