Fluid flow

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001503

The movement of hydrocarbons and water through the interconnected pore spaces of a subsurface rock formation, driven by pressure gradients between different areas of the reservoir. This process is described by Darcy's Law, which relates the flow rate to the rock's permeability, the fluid's viscosity, and the magnitude of the pressure difference. When multiple fluids are present, their movement is characterized by relative permeability curves, which quantify how each fluid phase interferes with the flow of the others.
