Hydrodynamic dispersion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006312
The spreading of a solute within a fluid as it moves through a porous medium, caused by variations in fluid velocity and molecular diffusion. This process results in the mixing of the solute with the surrounding fluid, leading to a dilution of its concentration over distance. It is quantified by a dispersion coefficient, which accounts for both mechanical dispersion and molecular diffusion.
