Mechanical dispersion

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007174

The spreading of a contaminant or tracer within a fluid due to variations in flow velocity and the tortuosity of the medium. This process is driven by the physical movement and mixing of fluid parcels, rather than molecular diffusion. In the atmosphere, it contributes to the dilution and transport of pollutants by turbulent eddies.
