Measurement cell

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007173

A defined volume or area within which atmospheric properties are sampled or averaged by an instrument. The size and shape of this cell depend on the sensor's design and the scale of the phenomena being observed. For example, a radiosonde measures conditions within a small volume as it ascends, while a satellite sensor observes a larger footprint.
