Mechanical mixing

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010607

Turbulent stirring of the air produced by wind shear and by flow over rough ground, as opposed to the stirring that buoyancy produces when the surface is warmer than the air above. It spreads heat, moisture, pollutants and momentum through the lower boundary layer and is the main mixing process in windy conditions with a neutral or stable atmosphere. Its depth increases with wind speed and with the roughness of the underlying surface.
