Mechanical turbulence

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007176

Irregular, chaotic fluid motion generated by the frictional drag of air flowing over rough surfaces or by wind shear. This turbulence is not primarily driven by buoyancy forces but by mechanical energy. It causes rapid mixing of atmospheric properties and is particularly prevalent in the atmospheric boundary layer.
