Turbulence
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002887
The irregular, chaotic, and seemingly random motion of a fluid, characterized by eddies and vortices across a wide spectrum of sizes. This state of fluid flow involves rapid variations of pressure and velocity in space and time, leading to efficient mixing and dissipation of energy. In the atmosphere, turbulence is generated by mechanical forces like wind shear and by thermal processes such as convection, and its intensity is measured by the eddy dissipation rate.
Irregular motion of the atmosphere, as indicated by gusts and lulls in the wind.
