Wave dissipation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010143
The process by which wave energy is lost from a propagating wave, typically through friction, breaking, or interaction with the medium. This energy loss converts organized wave motion into other forms, such as heat or turbulence. In the atmosphere, wave dissipation can occur as gravity waves break in the upper atmosphere, transferring momentum to the mean flow.
