Dissipation trail
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005067
A linear cloud feature that forms when an aircraft flies through a supercooled cloud layer, causing the supercooled water droplets to freeze and then sublimate. This process creates a clear, ice-free channel within the cloud, appearing as a dark line against the brighter cloud background. Dissipation trails are the inverse of contrails, which form from aircraft exhaust in clear air.
