Meteor trail
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007227
The luminous path of ionized gas and ablated material left behind by a meteoroid as it passes through the Earth's upper atmosphere. This transient phenomenon is caused by the intense heat generated by friction, which vaporizes the meteoroid and excites atmospheric gases. Meteor trails can persist for seconds to minutes and are sometimes used in radio communication due to their reflective properties.
