Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007226

A streak of light observed in the night sky, produced when a small extraterrestrial particle, known as a meteoroid, enters the Earth's atmosphere and ablates due to friction. The intense heat generated causes the surrounding air to ionize and glow. Most meteors burn up completely before reaching the ground.
