Condensation trail

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004577

A visible line of artificial cloud formed in the wake of an aircraft, consisting of ice crystals. These trails, commonly known as contrails, form when hot, humid exhaust gases from jet engines mix with cold, moist ambient air at high altitudes, causing water vapor to condense and freeze. Contrails can persist for hours and sometimes contribute to cloud cover and radiative forcing.
