Dissociation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005068
The process by which a molecule breaks apart into smaller atoms, ions, or radicals, often due to the absorption of energy. In the atmosphere, this frequently occurs through photolysis, where ultraviolet radiation provides the energy to break chemical bonds. An example is the dissociation of oxygen molecules (O2) into individual oxygen atoms (O) in the upper atmosphere, which is a key step in ozone formation.
