Distortion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005069
A change in the shape, size, or relative position of an object or field when represented on a map or through an optical system. In meteorology, map projections inherently introduce some distortion, as the curved surface of the Earth cannot be perfectly flattened without altering areas, shapes, or distances. Satellite imagery can also exhibit geometric distortion due to sensor characteristics or Earth's curvature.
