Photodissociation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007908
The process by which a molecule breaks apart into smaller fragments, atoms, or radicals due to the absorption of a photon. This is a primary mechanism for chemical reactions in the upper atmosphere, where high-energy ultraviolet radiation is abundant. An example is the photodissociation of oxygen molecules into oxygen atoms, which then form ozone.
