Odd oxygen

The sum of atomic oxygen (O) and ozone (O3) in the atmosphere. These species are highly reactive and are constantly interconverting through photochemical reactions, particularly in the stratosphere. Odd oxygen is central to the Earth's ozone layer, which absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
