Friction loss
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005790
The reduction in kinetic energy or momentum of an air parcel due to the resistive forces encountered as it moves through the atmosphere. This loss is primarily caused by turbulence and interaction with the Earth's surface, converting organized motion into heat. It is especially pronounced in the atmospheric boundary layer, where surface roughness elements exert a drag on the airflow.
