Wave dispersion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010142
The phenomenon where the phase velocity of a wave depends on its frequency or wavelength, causing different components of a wave packet to travel at different speeds. This leads to the spreading out of a wave group over time. Deep-water gravity waves are dispersive, with longer waves traveling faster than shorter waves.
