Dispersion relation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005057

A mathematical expression linking the frequency of a wave to its wavenumber, which characterizes how waves of different wavelengths propagate at different speeds. This relationship is derived from the underlying physics of the medium and the type of wave. In atmospheric dynamics, dispersion relations are applied to analyze the propagation of atmospheric gravity waves, Rossby waves, and sound waves.
