Acoustic dispersion

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003237

The phenomenon where the speed of sound in a medium varies with the frequency of the sound wave. In the atmosphere, this effect is generally negligible for audible frequencies but can become noticeable for very high frequencies or in specific gas mixtures. It arises from the time required for energy exchange between translational and internal molecular degrees of freedom.
