Aircraft turbulence

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003401

Irregular and often violent air movements experienced by an aircraft, caused by eddies and vertical currents in the atmosphere. It can result from convective activity, wind shear near jet streams, or airflow over mountainous terrain. Turbulence intensity is categorized based on the aircraft's reaction and the resulting change in vertical acceleration, with light, moderate, severe, and extreme levels defined by specific g-load thresholds.
