Aircraft thermometry

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003400

The measurement of air temperature from an aircraft, a process complicated by the effects of aerodynamic heating. As air is compressed against a sensor moving at high speed, its temperature increases, requiring a correction to determine the true static air temperature. The magnitude of this kinetic heating effect is proportional to the square of the aircraft's true airspeed, and its correction is calculated using the recovery factor of the specific temperature probe.
