True airspeed
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009821
The actual speed of an aircraft moving through the surrounding air mass, independent of the aircraft's movement over the ground. True airspeed (TAS) is calculated by correcting the indicated airspeed for variations in air density due to changes in altitude and temperature. An aircraft's ground speed is the vector sum of its true airspeed and the wind speed, meaning TAS equals ground speed only in calm air.
