Vortex thermometer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010067
An instrument designed to measure the true static air temperature from a moving aircraft by mechanically separating out the effects of dynamic heating. It uses a swirl chamber to create a vortex, which causes cooler air to concentrate at the center where the temperature sensor is located. This design minimizes errors from adiabatic compression and friction that affect simpler thermometer probes on fast-moving platforms.
