Outer vortex

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007756

A secondary or peripheral rotating air mass that surrounds a more intense central vortex, such as in a tropical cyclone or a polar vortex. In hurricanes, the outer vortex often consists of rainbands spiraling inward towards the eyewall. The dynamics of the outer vortex can influence the overall structure and intensity of the primary circulation.
