Polar vortex

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008033

A large-scale, persistent cyclonic circulation of cold air that surrounds the Earth's geographical poles in the middle and upper troposphere and the stratosphere. This vortex strengthens in winter, confining the coldest air to the polar regions. Disruptions or weakening of the polar vortex can lead to outbreaks of extremely cold air into mid-latitude areas.
