Polar wandering

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008034

The movement of the Earth's geographic poles relative to its surface over geological timescales. This phenomenon is distinct from the precession and nutation of the Earth's rotational axis, which are short-term astronomical variations. Paleomagnetic studies of ancient rocks provide evidence for past polar positions, revealing shifts of hundreds to thousands of kilometers.
