Polar ice
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008023
A large body of ice covering the polar regions of Earth, including both sea ice and the massive ice sheets over Greenland and Antarctica. This ice forms from the accumulation and compaction of snow over thousands of years or from the freezing of ocean water. The extent and thickness of polar ice are monitored via satellite as indicators of climate change, with seasonal minimums occurring at the end of each hemisphere's summer.
