High polar glacier

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006244

A type of glacier located in the high-latitude polar regions, such as Antarctica or Greenland, where the air temperature remains well below freezing year-round. The ice throughout the entire glacier, including at its base, is below the pressure melting point, causing it to be frozen to the bedrock. Consequently, these cold-based glaciers move very slowly, primarily through internal ice deformation rather than basal sliding.
