Basal sliding

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003841

The movement of a glacier or ice sheet over its bed, lubricated by a thin layer of meltwater at the ice-bedrock interface. This water reduces friction, allowing the ice mass to slip forward as a coherent block. Basal sliding is a primary mechanism of motion for temperate glaciers, where the temperature at the base is at the pressure melting point.
