Pressure melting
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010683
The phenomenon where ice melts at temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius due to an increase in pressure. The elevated pressure lowers the melting point of ice, allowing it to transition into liquid water. This process is observed in glaciers, where the weight of overlying ice causes basal melting, and under the runners of ice skates.
