Melting layer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007200
A distinct atmospheric region where frozen precipitation, such as snow or ice crystals, transitions into liquid rain as it falls through a layer of air above the freezing point. This layer is often detectable by weather radar as a 'bright band' due to the increased reflectivity of melting ice particles. The base of this layer corresponds to the 0-degree Celsius isotherm.
