Polar high

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008022

A persistent area of high atmospheric pressure located over the Earth's polar regions, particularly the Arctic and Antarctic. These highs are formed by the intense cooling and subsidence of air, leading to very cold surface temperatures and stable atmospheric conditions. They are a key feature of the global circulation, driving the polar easterlies.
