Polar anticyclone

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008013

A large area of high atmospheric pressure situated over the polar regions, characterized by cold, dense, and subsiding air. These semi-permanent features, also known as polar highs, result from the intense radiational cooling of the surface, particularly during the polar night. The resulting circulation is typically weak and shallow, extending only a few kilometers in altitude, and is associated with clear skies and very low temperatures.
