Polar amplification
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008012
The phenomenon where changes in the net radiation balance produce a larger change in surface temperature near the poles than in the global average. This effect is driven by positive feedback mechanisms, most notably the ice-albedo feedback, where melting ice and snow expose darker surfaces that absorb more solar radiation. Observed data and climate models show that the Arctic is warming at more than twice the rate of the rest of the planet.
