Polar-easterlies index
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008036
A measure of the strength of the surface-level polar easterly winds, calculated as the difference in sea level pressure between a high-latitude and a subpolar-latitude zone. This index quantifies the intensity of the polar cell circulation, reflecting the pressure gradient that drives cold air away from the poles. Positive values of the index indicate stronger-than-average easterlies, while negative values signify weaker easterlies or even westerly wind anomalies.
