Waves in the easterlies

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010165

Synoptic-scale atmospheric disturbances that propagate westward within the tropical easterly trade wind flow. These waves, also known as easterly waves or African easterly waves, are characterized by a trough in the pressure field and often lead to organized convection and rainfall. They are a primary precursor to tropical cyclone formation in the Atlantic basin.
