African Easterly Wave

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010353

A trough of low pressure that forms over North Africa and moves westward across the continent into the Atlantic Ocean during the summer months. These waves are a primary driver of weather variability in the region, producing organized clusters of thunderstorms. A portion of these waves serve as the precursor disturbances for the formation of tropical cyclones in the Atlantic basin.
