Subtropical easterlies index

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010794

A climate index that measures the strength of the low-level easterly trade winds within the subtropical belts of one or both hemispheres. It is typically calculated from zonal wind data or sea-level pressure differences between selected geographical points or averaged over a specific latitude band. Variations in this index are linked to large-scale climate patterns, including the El Niño-Southern Oscillation and monsoon dynamics.
