Polar wind
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008035
A continuous outflow of light ions, primarily hydrogen and helium, from the Earth's polar ionosphere into the magnetosphere. This process is driven by the pressure gradient of the heated plasma in the polar regions, overcoming gravity and the geomagnetic field. The polar wind contributes to the overall escape of atmospheric constituents into space.
