Polar outbreak

A rapid and extensive southward movement of very cold air from the polar regions into lower latitudes. This event causes a sharp and widespread decrease in temperature, often accompanied by strong winds and frost. Polar outbreaks are driven by the expansion of the polar high-pressure system.
